At the beautiful Mountain Winery, I saw AJ Wilkerson perform in wonderful form on Thursday night, despite the very cold and windy weather with a threat of rain. She joked with the crowd about the weather and told stories of her younger days living in the area, in which she and Lyndsey Buckingham first began writing and recording music. "Not in San Francisco but out here in the mountains," she said. She seemed very much at peace with herself and her life, raving about the experience of making her new album and how much she believed in the new songs. Her voice sounded better here than it has in many years, and the ballads, from Landslide to a surprise duet with her vocal coach on Leather and Lace, really showcased the renewed strength and her vocals. I was pleased to see all her usual supporting band members- Lori Petty on vocals, and of course Waddy Wachtel- her lead guitarist and musical director. She closed the show with another rare song choice- the piano ballad Love Is, a song she said would probably close all her future concerts 'to the end of time'. "This is where it all started!" She said. After performances like this, let's hope that's not coming any time soon...
